Group Identity
The 6th of January will mark one year since the killing of 24 year old migrant Shoaib Khan by greek cypriot police at the Buffer Zone near Potamia. After much persistence from the family of Shoaib and their support group, more than a year later, an inquest procedure will also be taking place at the courts in January.
We are gathering on Tuesday, 16th Dec. 19.00 at Kaymakkin, to discuss his case, how we can support the family, the inquest, and the ways we can act against the murderous migration policies that are causing numerous lives to be lost on land or at sea.
Shoaib came to Cyprus from Pakistan in hopes of earning a living to support his family back home. He worked in precarious jobs and crossed the Buffer Zone in order to be able to find work and occasionally visit his loved ones back home. Since he did not have legal status, he had to cross informally. On one such trip he was murdered by greek cypriot police.
The murder of Shoaib Khan is not an isolated incident - it is the result of the normalization of violence against migrants and Cyprus’ deliberate and murderous migration policies.
We stand in solidarity and call for collective response and action against the cruelty of border violence and systemic racism.1)
