Phaneromeni Square (also know as Manolis' square in the anarchist/anti-authoritarian scene) is a public square in the walled city of Nicosia, that acted as a space for socialization, political activity, alternative entertainment and for the reproduction of subcultures. While the character of the square as an alternative space for socialization was formed in the 1980s, the presence of an intense and consistent alternative and radical politicization could be confined in the period between 2008 and 2013. As a public space, Phaneromeni Square played a central role in the organization and formation of anarchist and leftist groups of the period, as well as in the development of the youth subculture of the period, through the systematic use of the square from youth, as well as through the holding of anti-consumerist street parties. Some of the groups that were active in the square were the Anti-Authoritarian Autonomous Action, Planodio Steki Dromou, Citizen's Initiative Alert, Falies, the Anonymous Student Group the Anarchist Union, the Antifascist Initiative and the student group Skapoula. The square was organzied, at least for a period, by holding an informal general assembly.
With the gentrification of the walled city of Nicosia and of Phaneromeni Square from 2012 onwards, the square's use as an alternative space began to fade. The name Manolis' square originates from the name given to the tree in the square.
